They rode 450 km today in temperatures between 10 and 18°C (50-64°F) and it's been raining.

There's been some mountains to see while riding, other than that, there's nothing newsworthy.

They're staying at a truck motel tonight, Google Earth has a nice picture of it.

Yet another sunny day - long drive, more than 500km.

Today the cops pulled them over four times. First they paid their 100 rubles (per cop) but the next 3 times they refused to pay, which luckily worked for them.

As they went through the city UFA they met Viktor, a Russian motorcyclist that waved to them. They stopped and chatted a bit, him in Russian and they in Icelandic. All of a sudden he tells them "Let's go!" and they ride together for a while. He was helping them navigate the city, great guy. After that he gave them his phone number (not sure how that's going to work) and they instead gave him the URL to the webpage - hopefully he'll get online somewhere and will be able to follow their journey.

In the afternoon they noticed that 2 more hours had been added to the clock so they're at GMT+6 hours.

Tonight they're staying at a Hotel they've dubbed the Mob Hotel. It's a nice 4 star hotel that's costing them 3'000 rubles for the room for the two of them. They made the decision to spend the night at a decent place before they'd start sleeping in the tent.

Einar has been wondering about all the bites he's been getting and has come to the conclusion that it may not just be flies but more than likely he's also gotten bitten by fleas at one of the less than nice places they spend the night the other day.

Tomorrow they continue their journey East.

After a bad nights sleep on army cots the brothers continued their journey in 30°C (86°F) and blistering sun. They rode 420 km today. The roads weren't good to begin with but as they went on the roads got better.

The scenery is changing into hills and valleys and less trees so they can see more of the landscape.

Einar got pulled over by the police today. He spoke Icelandic to them but when he heard a certain Russian word (they'd been told it meant "fine") he pulled out his wallet and paid 100 rubles (which they'd been told was the customary fee) and was allowed to continue his journey.

The tires are lasting better than expected and the fuel consumption is less so they're pleased with that.

May 21st 2007 - Nizhniy Novgorod PDF Print
Monday, 21 May 2007

Our two travelers woke up at 8am this morning only to realize that the clock on the TV said 9am, yet another timezone shift - they're +4 hours from Iceland. The temperature is around 30°C (86°F).

They rode through Nizhniy Novgorod without a map so it was slightly tricky to find their way. The traffic is fast which didn't help. Apart from that the scenery has been monotonous, flat and woodlands, but today it's changed some.

The price of accommodations has changed fast, the day before yesterday they paid 3'000 rubles for a room, yesterday 2'400 rubles and today only 280 rubles.

The bikes are doing well, despite Einar's bike having fallen twice (nothing got damaged).

Tonight they're staying at a roadside motel that they first thought were ruins. A man walked out of it so they decided it couldn't be completely demolished and checked it out (that might explain the low price on accommodations). The flies are apparently hungry as Einar has now been bitten 20 times.

Total km for today 460.

May 20th 2007 - Near Moscow PDF Print
Sunday, 20 May 2007

After a good nights sleep they went on to Moscow. They rode 620 km with the sun shining and the temperature around 25°C (77°F) making them feel like they're melting inside the protective bike gear.

There were long stretches where little was to be seen but as they got closer to Moscow things changed and everything started to look more modern, almost as if they were riding towards a large American city. They didn't enter Moscow itself but stayed on the outskirts.

It took two hours to find a place to sleep, Rock Ruruua Tepem. There they had a very good potato salad with not so good grilled "stuff" as they put it.

They've begun noticing the flies and Einar has been bitten twice already so the repellents will be used from now on.
