June 3rd 2007 - Ulan-Bator |

They have arrived in Ulan-Bator, tired and worn out but happy. The last few days have been like an adventure. The night before las they woke up in a sandstorm. Outside the wind was howling and the tent got filled with sand. Before they knew it the weather changed and it began pouring down with rain. That lasted about and hour but they had begun to wonder if this would last for several days. Fortunately this was not the case. When the wind had calmed down some they looked out and saw a starbrigt sky. Yesterday the wind was blowing behind them and riding conditions fairly good. However taking a break and stopping was almost impossible. Einar noticed that one of the welds on his tire mount had broken when they were in one of the smaller towns. With handgestures and simple signing they tried to communicate with the people and were finally directed to a man who was able to weld it for them, and did so VERY well. Continuing on, riding hard and having a good time. When they arrived in a town and needed gas they had a hard time paying for it as the locals would neither accept rubles nor dollars. Someone directed them towards the bank but it was closed. The town hotel couldn't save them. Prospects were dim until Einar saw a man driving a Landcruiser, stopped him and asked where they might be able to exchange their money. He asked them to follow him to a shipping container where men were stuffing sheepskins into bags. There they found a man that was willing to exchange the money for them and they finally got gas for the bikes. The wind was now blowing towards them, it got cold and it began to snow slightly with the temperature only reaching 2°C (36°F). They continued riding on a decent road and the plan was to continue on to Ulan-Bator until they reached road construction that diverted them. Having ridden for 10 hours they were tired and it was dark outside, Einar had dropped the bike twice, the only sensible thing was to find a place to spend the night in a tent. They found some shelter and put up their tent there, built a fire, cooked their camping food and got dressed in every piece of clothing they had before going to sleep. During the night the temperature dropped to -3°C (27°F). At around 9am they continued on to Ulan-Bator and arrived at 1pm. There they found the Ulan-Bator hotel where they got a room and took a long needed and well deserved shower. They've met Þór Daníelsson who works with the Red Cross. He's promised to help them get a VISA to get into Russia tomorrow. While waiting for the papers they're going to play tourists and try being allowed to stay the night in a native tent they've been seeing everywhere. The next destination will then be the Bajkal water in Russia. At the last count they're about a week ahead of their plans and if they'll stay on course in Russia this week will be spent in Alaska where they might have estimated less time than they need. The brothers are happy and pleased with the trip so far, sending their love back home. |
